Why do you love running with the Ernies?
I love running with the Ernies because of the people. No matter your age, pace or experience level, everyone is welcomed and encouraged. It’s a great mix of friendship, support and shared goals, and I’ve met some of the most fantastic people through the group. Whether it’s a hard session, an easy run or the obligatory coffee afterwards, it’s one of the highlights of my week.
What is your favourite distance and why?
5km. It’s short enough that you can race it regularly and it’s a distance that’s achievable for runners of all levels. It doesn’t matter how long you’ve been doing it, it doesn’t get easier, you just get faster. Whether it’s parkrun on a Saturday morning or races through Queensland Athletics, Queensland Masters Athletics and Athletics Australia, there are always opportunities to test yourself. Every 5km feels hard, but that’s part of what makes it so rewarding.
One tip for someone who have never run before.
Don’t overthink it, just get out the door and start. Run, jog, walk, whatever you can achieve is good for you physically and mentally. Even better, join a group. Running is easier, more enjoyable and much more sustainable when you have people around you to share the experience.
